DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program Fellowship

Open to

  • International artists (not residing primarily in Germany) working in film, literature, or music & sound.

  • Applicants must be established, with a developed artistic voice and body of work. Early-career artists still in or just out of art school are not eligible. Doctoral students are eligible.

  • In the visual arts category: only via nomination by the program’s specialist jury — direct applications are not accepted.

Application Fee
None indicated. Applications are submitted online. Submissions via e-mail are not accepted.

What’s Provided

  • For film: a 6-month residency. For literature or music & sound: a 12-month residency.

  • Monthly stipend to cover living expenses and rent.

  • A furnished apartment in Berlin.

  • Travel and baggage expenses (economy-class flight), including for spouse/registered partner and children (under 18) if they accompany the fellow for the full residency.

  • Health, accident, and liability insurance (if required), deducted from stipend payments.

  • Optional German language courses.

What the Applicant Must Cover

  • Cover any customs-related costs if sending physical materials by mail (only possible from within EU).

  • If applying, provide required digital application materials: one PDF including CV, documentation of work; plus links to audio-visual / published work if necessary (films, books, recordings).

  • If including partner/children: ensure visa/legal documentation (especially for non-heteronormative or non-married partnerships).

Duration

  • 6 months for film residencies.

  • 12 months for literature and music & sound residencies.

December 15, 2025 (for the 2027 residency cycle — film, literature, music & sound)

Other Essential Notes

  • Applicants must have a mature and distinctive artistic voice and body of work; this is not intended for very early-career artists or recent graduates.

  • Applicants residing primarily in Germany are excluded (with limited exceptions), and German nationals are generally excluded unless they have lived abroad for at least six years.

  • For visual arts, the fellowship is by nomination only; no open application.

  • Physical mail submissions (for books, scores etc.) are only possible from within the EU, and customs-related costs are the applicant’s responsibility.

  • After submission, applicants must keep all online links to their work accessible until at least August of the following year
