Open to

  • Predoctoral applicants: PhD candidates who have advanced to candidacy by the application deadline and plan to complete their dissertation during the fellowship.

  • Postdoctoral applicants: Researchers awarded their PhD within the past five years (i.e. after September 1, 2021).

  • Getty Scholar Grant applicants: Researchers with PhDs awarded more than five years ago should apply in that category.

  • Applicants must not be current Getty staff or immediate family members

What’s Provided

  • Nine‑month in‑residence program (typically late September through late June) at Getty Center (predoc) or Getty Center/Villa (postdoc)

  • Annual stipend: $30,000 (predoctoral), $35,000 (postdoctoral)

  • Workstation access at Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa

  • Travel stipend, scholar housing apartment, access to healthcare benefits

  • Participation in weekly lectures and intellectual life; access to GRI library and collections; special track via the African American Art History Initiative (AAAHI) available to eligible projects

What the Applicant Must Cover

  • Travel to Los Angeles (if not covered by travel stipend)

  • Personal expenses and materials not covered by the grant

  • The 2026–2027 program theme is Provenance, focusing on the ownership, movement, and histories of art objects globally  

  • Dedicated grants are offered under the African American Art History Initiative for research advancing knowledge in African American art history

  • Required application materials include: project proposal (up to 5 pages), writing sample (up to 25 pages), dissertation summary, selected bibliography, CV, doctoral status confirmation, and two confidential letters of recommendation
